Featured on the cover of this Dan’s Papers issue is the art of Kozo, an up-and-coming young artist who has gained rapid fame for his colored microrealism tattoos.

Avalon Ashley Bellos, gallery director at DTR Modern Gallery, which represents Kozo, enlightens us to the Israeli-born artist’s “Wonder Woman x Venus” cover art, his influences and unique style, and how he’s translated viral tattoo designs to sought-after works on canvas and paper.

DTR Modern Talks Kozo

Can you tell our readers about this week’s cover art by Kozo?

Title: “Wonder Woman x Venus.” Edition: unique variant of 25. Medium: lithograph and tattoo ink on paper. Size: 36″ x 28″. The artist’s significance lies in pioneering a new medium, blending tattoo, graphite shading and acrylic to craft astonishing mixed media masterpieces.

How is this week’s cover art representative of the artistic voice and/or the themes explored in Kozo’s portfolio?

The artist is an astonishing minimalist with a penchant for both classical and modern themes. One will also observe the influence of surrealist and post-impressionists as well. The cover “Wonder Woman” is an ode to Roy Lichtenstein, and in other works there may be a modern take on Van Gogh’s iconic “Starry Night.”

When did DTR Modern’s relationship with Kozo begin, and how has his status in the art world evolved since the gallery first acquired his work?

Gallery Director Guy Vardi discovered Kozo’s tattoo work in 2022 and was so impressed that he reached out. In just one year at the gallery, Kozo swiftly became one of the most sought-after artists, nearly selling out of multiple works, and he is now in several impressive private collections around the world.

With DTR Modern Galleries in NYC, Palm Beach, Nantucket, Boston and Washington, D.C., has Kozo’s art proven especially popular in one of these art markets?

Kozo’s work is universally transcendent, immediately captivating and meditative. The world yearned for an innovative young artist to elevate the ancient art of tattooing to new heights.

Would you like to share any closing thoughts or additional information about Kozo’s art and career?

Kozo, a native of Israel, is renowned for his vibrant microrealistic tattoos. His lifelong passion for art ignited in childhood, and he honed his skills in drawing, sculpting and painting during his formative years. But it was his transition to the unique canvas of human skin that truly set him apart.

Today, Kozo is returning to his artistic origins, translating his popular culture-infused tattoo designs from the realm of social media to more traditional mediums like canvas and paper. In doing so, he crafts one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

Characterized by meticulous lines, seamless gradients and intricate micro-tattoo creations, Kozo’s art is synonymous with minimalism, adhering to the belief that less can convey more. Yet, his work is profoundly rooted in storytelling and connecting people and cultures.

Kozo draws inspiration from classic painters like Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Jacques-Louis David, not only for their artistic mastery but also for their unwavering dedication and work ethic.
