Mr. Wash, a self-taught artist who has gone from wrongful incarceration to artistic acclaim, delivered a talk at The Church in Sag Harbor hosted by Chief Curator Sara Cochran.
The event highlighted the value of time and resilience. Falsely sentenced to life in prison in the late 1990s for nonviolent drug offenses, Mr. Wash used his 21 years behind bars to hone his artistic skills.
His portraits often depicted fellow inmates as free men. In his talk, Mr. Wash shared insights into his personal history, artistic journey and his experience in the Sag Harbor community.
