Honoring Dan’s Summer Preview Cover Artist: Joe Chierchio
The cover of the 2024 Dan’s Papers “Summer Preview” is noticeably distinct from previous editions — swapping the typical cover photography for a charming cover drawing that commemorates the Hampton Jitney‘s 50th anniversary. This special “Summer Preview” cover was thoughtfully created by Joe Chierchio, a Water Mill artist whose work has frequently appeared on the cover of Dan’s Papers. Here, he discusses his approach to the anniversary cover, his experience aboard the Jitney and how the Hamptons have influenced him as an artist.
A Chat with Joe Chierchio
How did this exciting art partnership with Hampton Jitney come about?
The Hampton Jitney company liked my Dan’s Papers covers, and they asked me to create one for them.
One of your Hampton Jitney paintings appeared on the cover of Dan’s Papers in 2014. In what ways does the Dan’s Summer Preview cover capture the same subject from a fresh perspective?
I wanted to create a nostalgic feeling by showing the look and design of the original 1974 Jitney next to today’s modern 2024 Hampton Jitney.
What has been your experience riding the Hampton Jitney, and are there any memories aboard that have stuck with you?
My memories are of a comfortable, fast, convenient ride. Aboard the Jitney, I met interesting, fun people who are still my friends today.
What factors do you think have contributed to the level of icon status that Hampton Jitney has developed over the last 50 years?
It’s the best ride in town — always on time, professional and cordial.
How do you feel the Hamptons area and its community have influenced you and your art career?
Many talented artists are in the Hamptons. It’s a friendly competition “keeping up with the Joneses” art wise. There are also great galleries to show your art.
Would you like to share any closing thoughts or additional info about your upcoming exhibitions or projects?
My art is always evolving. I am still working on my series Bodies of Work and Endangered Species, and always on new covers for Dan’s Papers. My work can be seen at Arthur T. Kalaher Fine Art in Southampton and on my website.
