Meet Dan's North Fork Cover Artist: Dorothy Russo
This month’s cover of Dan’s Papers North Fork features “Cowabunga” by North Fork artist Dorothy Russo. Here, she discusses the cover art’s inspiration, her love of pastels and her muses this summer.
Talking with Dorothy Russo
What inspired your “Cowabunga” artwork, and what did the creation process of the cover art entail?
A friend showed me a picture of her grandson, and I just loved the composition, the light, the story. To do the water justice, I sat on the water’s edge and studied the rolling waves.
How would you describe your art style, and how did you develop it?
I have painted with other mediums, but for me, pastels are magic. I love the layering of color creating the unexpected. I usually do a quick work “plein air,” then take pictures of the fleeting light and complete the work in several sittings.
I love capturing a moment in time — a feeling.
What do you find rewarding about being an artist, and how has the North Fork influenced your experience/career?
The North Fork constantly inspires me — the light, the beauty. I passed by a barn one evening with the most vibrant sunset behind it, and it just took my breath away. And yes, it is a painting.
What is one artistic goal that you hope to accomplish this summer or this year?
For any artistic person, there is a thought, a seed that somehow develops. I have heard writers describe this as well — something you are just drawn to. For me — don’t laugh — it has been hanging laundry and hay bales. That and the unexpected will be my goal for this summer.
But then, being on a Dan’s cover is always a goal and an honor.
