Habitat for Humanity Dedicates Two New Homes in Riverside
Habitat for Humanity of Long Island held a double house dedication ceremony for two new homes on June 14 in partnership with the Town of Southampton Housing Authority.
Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 116 Vail Avenue to celebrate the completion of two new affordable homes for a pair of families — Derek, Phyllis and their three children, and Jose, Eliana and their four children.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the dedication of these two new beautiful homes in Riverside,” said Jimmy Jack, CEO/Executive Director Habitat for Humanity of Long Island. “This milestone exemplifies the collective efforts of our volunteers, partners, and the hardworking families who will soon call these houses their homes.”
As part of Habitat’s homeownership program requirements, both families completed 300 hours of “sweat equity,” which includes helping to build their home and houses for others in the program, participating in financial preparation and home maintenance classes and volunteering for community service. Each homeowner will sign a 30-year mortgage with an affordable interest rate, with Habitat for Humanity of Long Island holding a second mortgage.
“Owning this home will be the greatest achievement of our lives.” Eliana said.
The mission of Habitat for Humanity of Long Island is to strengthen communities by providing quality, affordable homes while giving a “hand up” to the lower-income families on Long Island. This particular project is part of a years-long quest to build six single-family homes within the Riverside community.
“To all the people, organizations, corporations, volunteers, friends, and supporters who donated time, material, talent, and resources; thank you for your selfless acts and generosity,” said Curtis Highsmith, Executive Director of Southampton Housing Authority. “You are truly an example it takes a community coming together to build community.”
