Riverhead Awarded $24.12M Grant for Transportation Funding
The Town of Riverhead has secured a $24.12 million federal grant that will help fund continuing revitalization efforts in the community’s downtown.
The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant is part of a discretionary grant program that provides funding for vast investments in efficient transportation infrastructure that will have a local or regional impact.
“I am beyond excited that downtown Riverhead was awarded federal RAISE funding in a highly competitive selection process,” said Riverhead Town Supervisor Timothy Hubbard. “I am grateful that the application prepared by the Community Development team was so well received by the federal Department of Transportation after being strongly supported by our entire Congressional delegation.”
The majority of Riverhead’s grant money will go toward a newly constructed parking garage to relocate riverfront parking. In addition, $4.8 million will go toward flood protection and $4.6 million will assist with improving streetscapes in the downtown area.
“This transformational infusion of federal funding will allow Riverhead Town to reclaim the Peconic riverfront for public enjoyment, install necessary flood mitigation measures, spur mixed-use development and make downtown safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
